In my opinion this quote means that many opportunities that we have in our lifetime are sabotaged by our own arrogance, and that most of the problems that we experience in life are the result of our own actions. For example a kid who doesn't do his/her homework consequently has a nine times out of ten chance of failing a test. This problem can only be blamed on the individual's lack of study. So we must strive to not create problems for ourselves and not "shadow" or miss opportunities because of our own arrogance.
